Iowa high school baseball roundup: Scores, stats and more from Tuesday’s 2A and 1A district semifinals
No. 5 Dyersville Beckman sets up a high-stakes meeting with rival Cascade in Class 2A

Jul. 10, 2024 4:26 pm
DYERSVILLE — Luke Sigwarth was the right batter at the right time.
Dyersville Beckman’s elite all-stater powered up and propelled the defending state champions deeper into the postseason.
Sigwarth belted a three-run home run in the fourth inning and broke open a tie game, helping the fifth-ranked Blazers to an 8-2 victory over Monticello in a Class 2A District 7 semifinal Tuesday night at Commercial Club Park.
Beckman (18-10) advances to the district final against rival Cascade (13-12) here Saturday at 7 p.m.
“It feels awesome, especially as a senior,” Sigwarth said. “Just have to keep the (Beckman) tradition going.
“Playing Cascade will be a great game. There will be a lot of people there. Strong baseball communities. It’s going to be a packed house.”
Monticello (12-12) split with Beckman last week and challenged early. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the second. Brady Gogel walked and scored on a Cael Sampson groundout. Reed Brunscheen was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat.
Beckman responded with two in the bottom half. Jake Schmidt reached on an error and Eli Kluesner singled to lead off the inning. Chase White added an RBI single and Dylan Recker was plunked with the bases loaded to tie the game.
White and Recker helped set up Sigwarth’s big blast. White drew a two-out walk and Recker singled to bring Sigwarth to the plate.
“There were just a couple plays that we made that were turning points,” Beckman Coach Ryan Mabe said. “The bottom of the order really came through and turned that lineup over before Sigwarth hit that home run.”
Sigwarth opened the game with a single but popped out in his second at-bat. He said he was getting jammed when he crowded the plate earlier, so he adjusted by stepping off a bit. The move allowed him to turn on the pitch, driving it over the right-field fence for his second home run of the season.
“I got the barrel out in front,” Sigwarth said. “He gave me a fastball, I put a good swing on it and just let it fly. I felt it right away.”
White and Recker also added RBIs in the three-run fifth. Recker, Sigwarth and Kluesner each had two hits.
Recker threw five scoreless innings in relief of starter Schmidt. Recker allowed just one hit and struck out six, giving way to Drew Thier for the seventh.
“I’m proud of the way the guys battled,” Mabe said. “Recker came in at a tough spot. Recker came in and was a bulldog for us.”
Waukon 5, Starmont 0
Gabriel Weighner tallied two hits and an RBI, helping the Indians advance to the 2A District 6 final. Waukon’s Colton O’Neill tossed a complete game, allowing two hits and walking two, while striking out eight. Waukon (12-17) hosts Denver (6-19) Saturday. The Cyclones upset Upper Iowa Conference champion MFL MarMac, 3-2, at Monona.
Tipton 12, Durant 7
The Tigers avenged three regular-season losses with a 2A District 8 semifinal victory. They jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first and trailed by four after the fourth. Tipton erupted for seven runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth for the upset. Jett Kamberling had two hits, two runs and an RBI. Caleb Bohlmann and Trey Ingles also scored twice. Kendrick Heffernan and Andy Shumaker added three and two RBIs, respectively, for the Tigers, who will face the winner of Wednesday’s game between Wilton (18-10) and No. 10 Northeast (19-8).
Anamosa 14, Winfield-Mount Union 1 (5 innings)
Easton Wheeler produced on the mound and at the plate in the Blue Raiders’ 2A District 10 semifinal win. He pitched a three-hitter, allowing just one unearned run and fanning six. At the plate, he batted 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored once. Jack Sellnau drove in four runs and Carter Kuehl and Dane Owen had three RBIs apiece for Anamosa. Sellnau and Owen each had two hits. The Blue Raiders (19-9) host Mediapolis (21-7) in the district finals. The Bulldogs edged Mid-Prairie, 2-1, to advance.

Maquoketa Valley 4, North Tama 3
The Wildcats used two runs in the fourth inning to slide past North Tama in a 1A District 9 semifinal at Traer.
