On one of my recent assignments, I attended a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day event. This event invites people to learn about various farming techniques. We had embarked on a hayrack ride to one of the fields where several crops were growing.

While the adults were preoccupied with talks of soil and plant spacing, two little girls sat on a piece of farm equipment chatting with each other. Both the girls’ parents operate community-supported agriculture farms, and the kids were discussing their favorite types of vegetables -- not a typical conversation among this age group.

As a photojournalist it’s important to always take note of your surroundings and to step back to find new perspectives and photo opportunities. Had I not turned around and walked away from the group of people chatting about planting, I would have missed this little moment. It’s one of those slice of life photos that just brings a smile to your face.
