Jul. 3, 2024 4:06 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS -- A Burlington man was arrested after a high-speed chase Tuesday that ended when the driver crashed into a water-filled ditch and ran from the wreck.
Cedar Rapids police located Antonio McLaurin, 38, on Interstate 380 between Tower Terrace Road and County Home Road at about 5:30 a.m.
He was arrested and charged with providing false information. He also has multiple outstanding warrants in other jurisdictions, according to a Cedar Rapids police news release.
According to a criminal complaint, McLaurin repeatedly identified himself to police as Earl Nowell III. His identity was established by his dirver’s license photo and tattoos on his arms, police said.
The news release said officers saw the car speeding near the 1800 block of Johnson Avenue NW early Tuesday.
The car eluded officers, but was spotted again near First Avenue and L Street NW. It continued to flee police, driving north on I-380 until it crashed into a water-filled ditch near County Home Road, the release states.
The occupant or occupants ran from the wreck, and Cedar Rapids police searched the area with help from other law enforcement agencies.
The news release and criminal complaint did not state whether police believe McLaurin was driving the vehicle or how many occupants it may have had.
