IOWA CITY — The dominoes are beginning to fall following 2025 football recruits’ official visits to Iowa and elsewhere last month.
Out of the 10 undecided 2025 recruits who took official visits to Iowa in June, six have made decisions. Another one plans to announce his decision on Saturday. Here is a breakdown of where they went and who else the Hawkeyes are waiting on:
Committed to Iowa
Offensive lineman Cameron Herron was the first prospect to commit to Iowa after the Hawkeyes’ big official visit weekend. The three-star prospect from Indianapolis chose Iowa over Northwestern, Cincinnati, Louisville, West Virginia and Boston College.
Fellow offensive lineman Lucas Allgeyer chose Iowa over offers from Kansas State, Northwestern, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Miami (Fla.) and other programs. Allgeyer has a four-star rating from On3 and three-star ratings from the other major recruiting sites.
Defensive back Charles Bell, a three-star prospect from Boston, committed to Iowa over Penn State, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Tennessee and other Power Four programs. He was the second 2025 defensive back to commit to Iowa.
Defensive lineman Brad Fitzgibbon picked Iowa over Kansas and Michigan State. The three-star prospect from the Chicago area became Iowa’s first defensive line commitment of the 2025 cycle.
Iowa already had commitments from eight 2025 prospects before their official visits:
- OL Joey VanWetzinga
- LB Burke Gautcher
- QB Jimmy Sullivan
- LB Carson Cooney
- TE Thomas Meyer
- TE Eli Johnson
- DB Drew MacPherson
- TE Mason Woods
Committed elsewhere
Offensive lineman Brock Heath, a three-star prospect from Overland Park, Kan., committed to Kansas State less than a week after his official visit to Iowa. He also took visits to Kansas and Northwestern.
Joshua Guerrier, a three-star defensive back from Ocoee, Fla., committed to Pittsburgh on July 1. His other official visits were to Iowa, Iowa State, South Florida and Boston College.
No decision yet
Christian Hudson has narrowed his list of potential schools to four — Iowa, Maryland, UCF and Iowa State. He plans to announce his decision on Saturday. The defensive lineman from Daytona Beach, Fla., has a three-star rating from 247Sports.
Iose Epenesa, with a five-star rating from 247Sports, would be the crown jewel of Iowa’s 2025 recruiting class. The defensive end from Edwardsville, Ill., has taken official visits to Penn State, Missouri, Iowa, Utah and Miami (Fla.).
Terrence Smith, the three-star wide receiver from the Chicago suburbs, is down to Iowa and Minnesota, according to 247Sports. Iowa does not have any commitments yet from wide receivers in the 2025 class.
Scott Starzyk, the top kicker in the 2025 class as ranked by Kohl’s Kicking Camps, received a scholarship offer from the Hawkeyes during his official visit.
What this means for Iowa moving forward
On3, which ranks Iowa 37th, is the only recruiting site to have the Hawkeyes’ 2025 class in the top 50. 247Sports has Iowa at No. 57, as of Wednesday morning, and Rivals has Iowa at No. 59.
Even if all four of the uncommitted June official visitors choose Iowa (while no other schools pick up commitments), 247Sports’ class ranking calculator indicates the Hawkeyes would still be outside of the top 25.
The lack of love from the recruiting site is not necessarily a reason for Hawkeyes to be concerned, however.
Volume heavily influences recruiting rankings — Iowa only has 12 committed scholarship players in 2025 — and a bigger class is not necessarily a better class.
This is especially the case as college football braces for possible roster limits in the wake of the House vs. NCAA settlement. Iowa has 131 players on its roster; continuing to recruit as if roster sizes will remain that large might simply mean more athletes to cut down the road.
