CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar River in Cedar Rapids was projected to crest at 14.1 feet early Saturday and then recede below its 12-feet flood stage by Sunday morning.
As the river swelled, the city of Cedar Rapids temporarily closed boat ramps and access points to the river, deployed pumps and closed low-lying streets and several trails. The streets that have been or expected to be closed are:
- Otis Road SE from the Cargill facility south to Prairie Park Fishery entrance east of the railroad crossing
- Penn Avenue NW and First Street NW to Ellis Boulevard NW
- Ellis Boulevard NW from O Avenue NW to Penn Avenue NW
- Ellis Road from River Bluff Road to Covington Road
- Old River Road SW from Ely Road to Sunshine Court SW
The city said it didn’t expect homes or businesses to be affected by the minor flooding predicted by the National Weather Service.
The weather service said that on Friday morning, the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids was measured just above flood stage at 12.8 feet. It was expected to crest overnight and then drop below flood stage by Sunday morning, reaching 10.7 feet by Monday morning.
The city said it planned to reopen streets and boat ramps once the waters had receded below flood stage.
The weather service warned the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids will rise again next week, reaching just below flood stage — 11.9 feet — by Thursday afternoon before receding again.
Forecasters said the Cedar River on Friday morning had risen about a foot over its 12.5-feet flood stage at Blairs Ferry Road in Palo, but was expected to continue falling afterward to 11.4 feet Monday.
