CEDAR RAPIDS — A love for the game is what the Iowa Women’s Softball League has to offer college athletes.
“I think it’s a really great opportunity to keep playing over the summer and keep developing your skills for your college season,” said Devin Simon, a freshman infielder at the University of Iowa who plays in the summer league.
Since 2017, the league has been made up of four sponsored teams and 60 collegiate women fast-pitch softball players. These players come from all over the Midwest and represent up to 30 different colleges.
“It’s helped me have fun playing the game,” said Simon, a former Cascade prep. “I know a lot of times it gets stressful in college and this is really laid back and it’s nice to meet new people, be relaxed while you’re playing, and just enjoy the fun part of the game.”
Simon plays for Texas Roadhouse where she’s had the ability to meet other women with similar passions.
“I would say playing against different levels and players,” said teammate Peyton Souhrada, a sophomore outfielder at Cornell, when asked what her favorite part about the IWSL is.
The IWSL takes in players from any collegiate division. That is what allows a DI player like Simon to be on the same team as a DIII player like Souhrada.
Having teams with a family-like atmospheres — during their collegiate season and in the summer — helps a player understand what it takes to form a strong team.
“It’s important to support each other on and off the field,” Souhrada said. “Getting to know each other in softball and also out of softball on a deeper level is really good for you to connect with your team.”
The league’s eighth season will wrap up in three weeks, giving the athletes plenty of time to improve their skills and mentalities.
“Don’t compare yourself to other so much,” Simon said. “Just focus on your own journey because everyone’s path is so unique and comparison won’t get you anywhere.”
Texas Roadhouse is 3-1-1 after tying Bosch Financial on Sunday at Ellis Park. Games continue this Sunday at Kirkwood Community College. Texas Roadhouse takes on Ironside Apparel, which leads the league at 4-1.
