CEDAR RAPIDS — A unique fundraiser is seeking to collect more than a quarter of a million pairs of shoes this week to benefit a clinic in Cedar Rapids that provides free care to people without insurance.
His Hands Free Clinic will earn money based on the total weight of the pairs of shoes that are donated between Monday and Friday this week. For every 2,500 shoes donated, the clinic will receive $1,000 to support its mission.
The clinic’s goal is to break the world record for most shoes collected in a week. To do that, they must collect at least 250,001 pairs.
His Hands Free Clinic, founded in 1992, provides for the “physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those without adequate resources.” The services provided by the nonprofit clinic include: medical, dental, chiropractic, women’s health, physical therapy, durable medical equipment, spiritual care, patient advocacy/social work services, prescription assistance and off-site optical.
The shoes collected this week will be redistributed through Funds2Orgs, which works with small businesses in developing countries to provide inventory for them to sell, which promotes commerce opportunities and leads to economic sustainability,“ its website states.
“A lot of people have extra shoes in their closets they never wear, but are in good condition,” said Dawn Brouwers, Development Director at His Hands Free Clinic. “By doing so, we raise money for health care at no cost and we have the chance to help provide shoes to families in Cedar Rapids and developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
Donated shoes must be in pairs and they should be gently worn or new. The donated shoes, boots, sandals and flip-flops should not have any holes or rips in them. No rollerblades, ice skates or wheelies shoes will be accepted.
Shoes can be dropped off at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1285 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, or at more than 80 other locations across Cedar Rapids. Find the full list of donation locations at hishandsclinic.org/shoes/drop-off-locations.
