CEDAR RAPIDS — Here’s your fifth look of the season at what we call Iowans In The Minors. It’s a bi-weekly look at how baseball players in the major leagues and affiliated minor leagues are fairing.
That’s guys from the Gazette area and University of Iowa. We added another major league recently when Adam Mazur was promoted to the big league club by the San Diego Padres. A starting pitcher, Mazur began this season in Double-A and worked his way up to Triple-A prior to his call up.
All the following statistics for players are through Friday.
One other note: pitcher Connor Schultz, a Cedar Falls graduate who played at Iowa, has been signed by the Chicago Cubs out of independent baseball. He’s been assigned to the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League Cubs but has yet to appear in a game.
Keaton Anthony (Iowa/Philadelphia Phillies) — Let’s just say the outfielder has beenon a heater this month for low-Class A Clearwater of the Florida State League. He is 14 for 28 at the plate in eight games, with four home runs and nine RBIs. Has a .346 batting average overall, with four HRs and 21 RBIs. Has more walks (27) than strikeouts (25).
Ben Beutel (Davenport Assumption/Iowa/Chicago White Sox) — Lefty reliever has appeared in eight games for high-A Winston-Salem of the South Atlantic League. Has no record and a 5.00 earned run average, with 12 strikeouts in 9 innings.
Jake Bockenstedt (Cedar Rapids Washington/Chicago White Sox) — Has pitched in nine games, eight starts, for low-A Kannapolis of the Carolina League. Has 3-4 record and 2.84 earned run average. Holding opponents to a .220 batting average. Just five hits and a run allowed over 12 innings in two June starts.
Will Christophersen (Iowa/Los Angeles Angels) — Right-handed reliever has 1-0 record and 4.80 ERA in 14 appearances for low-A Inland Empire (California League). Just 22 hits allowed in 30 innings, with 46 strikeouts.
Duncan Davitt (Iowa/Tampa Bay Rays) — Continues throwing well as a starting pitcher for high-A Bowling Green of the South Atlantic League. Has a 5-4 record and 3.11 ERA in 12 starts. Just 50 hits allowed in 66 2/3 innings, with 70 Ks.
Jack Dreyer (Iowa/Los Angeles Dodgers) — Lefty reliever is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 10 appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City. A WHIP of 0.85 and 18 strikeouts in 13 innings. Between Double-A and Triple-A this season, he’s 0-1 with a 0.98 ERA in 19 outings.
Calvin Harris (Western Dubuque/Chicago White Sox) — Catcher has played 31 games at high-A Winston-Salem. Hitting .223 with a home run and 16 runs batted in.
Grant Judkins (Iowa/Oakland Athletics) — Was part of a three-pitcher no-hitter Thursday night for high-A Lansing of the Midwest League against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. His contribution was 2 2/3 relief innings. Is 1-3 with a 3.60 ERA overall this season in 12 games, including six starts.
Mitch Keller (Cedar Rapids Xavier/Pittsburgh Pirates) — Right-handed starter had a six-game win streak snapped this past week by the St. Louis Cardinals, who got to him for eight hits and four runs in six innings. Still is 8-4 with a 3.36 ERA in 14 starts this season for the Pirates.
Austin Krob (Lisbon/San Diego Padres) — Left-hander grinding away as pitching rotation guy for Double-A San Antonio of the Texas League. Is 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA in 12 appearances, 11 starts.
Ty Langenberg (Iowa/Minnesota Twins) — Right-hander was promoted last week from low-A Fort Myers of the Florida State League to the high-A Kernels. Has yet to pitch for C.R. Went 3-3 with a 3.38 ERA in nine starts this season for the Mighty Mussels. Had 56 strikeouts in 48 innings.
Adam Mazur (Iowa/San Diego Padres) — Right-hander had a great big league debut for the Padres, going six innings and giving up just two hits and a run against the Angels. Not so good since. It was three innings and eight runs allowed in his second start, against the Diamondbacks. Then Saturday it was six walks and two runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Mets.
Mason McCoy (Iowa/San Diego Padres) — Infielder is a Chihuahua. That’d be a member of the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas, where he’s hitting .234 in 60 games. Has four home runs, 28 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
Cole McDonald (New Hampton/Iowa/Houston Astros) — Righty reliever is struggling at Triple-A Sugar Land of the Pacific Coast League. Is 1-0 in 19 appearances with a 10.24 ERA. The PCL is a notorious hitter’s league.
Ian Moller (Dubuque Wahlert/Texas Rangers) — Catcher has played in 41 games for the high-A Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League. Hitting .192 with a homer and nine RBIs.
A.J. Puk (Cedar Rapids Washington/Miami Marlins) — Southpaw has been strictly a bullpen guy after coming off the injured list following four ineffective starts. Is 0-7 with a save and 7.11 ERA in 16 games.
Colin Rea (Cascade/Northern Iowa/Milwaukee Brewers) — Just keeps on keeping on as an unheralded member of Milwaukee’s starting rotation. Seven innings, three hits and a run (and a win) in his last start, against Toronto. Is 5-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 13 appearances, 11 starts, overall this season.
Tommy Specht (Dubuque Wahlert/Texas Rangers) — Outfielder is with low-A Down East (Carolina League). Hitting .184 in 42 games, with a home run and 20 RBIs.
Connor Van Scoyoc (Cedar Rapids Jefferson/Colorado Rockies) — Things gradually improving for the right-handed pitcher at Double-A Hartford of the Eastern League. Is 1-0 in two June starts with a 2.45 ERA. Is 3-5 with a 6.18 ERA overall in 11 starts for the Yard goats.
Trenton Wallace (Davenport Assumption/Iowa/Toronto Blue Jays) — Lefty starter for Double-A New Hampshire of the Eastern League. Has thrown well in 11 starts, with 3-2 record and 2.94 ERA. Has 67 strikeouts in 52 innings.
Peyton Williams (Iowa/Toronto Blue Jays) — First baseman is making his way back after being activated from the 60-day disabled list. Played five games for the Rookie-level Florida Complex League Blue Jays, three games for low-A Dunedin of the Florida State League and 10 games for high-A Vancouver of the Northwest League, where he currently is playing and is 4 for 34 at the plate.
Keaton Winn (Pekin/Iowa Western Community College/San Francisco Giants) — Is 3-7 with a 6.45 ERA in 11 starts for the Giants. Gave up just four hits and a run in five innings in his last start, against the Los Angeles Angels.
