GOP officials’ loyalty to Trump is embarrassing

I was embarrassed when I opened the paper May 31 and saw the response of Iowans in Congress, the Senate, our state attorney general and governor to the verdict in Donald Trump’s trial in New York. The GOP and former president Trump have been the ones to bring politics into the trial. First Trump himself railed against the judge, jurors, prosecutors and witnesses. Then several prominent party members, acting as minions for Trump after a gag order and fines quieted him, ranted outside the courtroom of the injustice of the trial.
It makes me doubt if they ever had a government class. There are three separate branches to government: executive, legislative and judicial. The kind of behavior exhibited by these elected officials undermines the credibility of all three branches. I certainly don’t always agree with any of these branches. However, as a citizen I should respect them. So should public officials. I haven’t heard or seen Democrats outside Sen. Menendez’s trial complaining. Let the courts do their job and you do your job as legislators.
