SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Carson Schaake, a golfer for the University of Iowa from 2013-2017, qualified for next week’s U.S. Open by being one of four qualifiers at the 64-player final qualifier at Springfield (Ohio) Country Club.
Schaake tied PGA Tour pro Beau Hossler for second place, a shot behind Tour pro Zac Blair. The fourth spot went to a playoff between Cameron Davis and 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott. Davis won the playoff. Scott’s streak of majors appearances will end at 91 unless he gets a spot in the Open as a first alternate.
Schaake shot 8-under-par 132 over 36 holes to earn his second berth in an Open. He also qualified in 2021. His brother and another former Hawkeye, Alex Schaake, qualified for last year’s Open. He tried again Monday after advancing from local qualifying in Nebraska with his brother last month, but was 7-over.
Two other former Iowa players, Mac McClear and Matthew Walker, were even and 3-over, respectively.
Cedar Rapids native Zach Johnson, a 2-time majors winner, will miss the Open for the third-straight year. He was 2-under for his 36 holes.
The Open is June 13-16 in Pinehurst, N.C.
