National Mental Health Awareness Month urgently reminds us that death by suicide doesn't always happen to other people. Iowa youth ages 15 to 19 are especially vulnerable, making that fatal choice well above the national average. For a family left behind, it's a tragedy that words cannot describe and emotional pain and guilt that never heal.
In July 2022, a new Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number was officially issued nationally. Surveys indicate that beyond mental health agencies, nearly 70% of the population is not aware of this new 988 hotline or even know what it's for.
Please memorize this number and share it. Free posters, magnets and stickers are readily available online to post in public places. To speak to someone, go to 988lifeline.org. If a friend, neighbor or family member is in crisis, don't hesitate. Call or text 988.
Don't avoid a person or family who is grieving a loss due to suicide. Offer your condolences with a gentle hug or touch on the arm. Make eye contact. Speak the name of the lost loved one. Share time looking at photos. Run errands. Be a sounding board. Make follow-up visits. A listening ear can be as helpful as words.
Precious lives are at stake. It's time to bring mental health and death by suicide out of the dark shadows of stigma and indifference.
988 — memorize it now!
