Tanager Place’s free LGBTQ+ Youth Summer Camp looking for volunteers, donations
Annual summer camp offers inclusive space for middle, high school kids

May. 30, 2024 11:06 am
Tanager Place’s free LGBTQ+ Youth Summer Camp in August is looking for volunteers and camp counselors.
The camp is free to students in middle and high school and takes place Aug. 12-16. Families interested in having their children attend the camp can join the waitlist now by emailing The Tanager Place LGBTQ+ Youth Center Director Lori Ampey at lampey@tanagerplace.org. Registration opens July 15.
Ampey said seeing kids feel free to be themselves at camp last year was “one of the best experiences of my life.”
“The thankfulness from parents that they have a place where their kid can go, and they know they’re safe. They don’t have to worry about getting picked on and bullied. They can swim in an atmosphere of safety and use a bathroom that’s inclusive,” Ampey said.
This is the second year the camp is being offered by Tanager Place, a children’s human service agency in Linn County that focuses on prevention, treatment and outreach in serving children, teens and young adults.
The camp is at Camp Tanager, 1614 W. Mount Vernon Rd. SE, Mount Vernon.
Donations for the camp also are being accepted online at tanagerplace.org/get-involved/#donate-form.
Volunteers needed include:
- Three camp counselors to stay for the full week;
- Daytime assistance from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily;
- Afternoon assistance from 1-5 p.m. daily;
- Evening assistance from 5-9 p.m. daily;
- And Friday morning send-off from 9-10 a.m.
Volunteers must pass a background check. Volunteers can register online at tanagerplace.org/volunteer
