James Lynn Kelly, 83, of Cedar Rapids, formally of Belle Plaine, passed away peacefully with family by his side on May 24, 2024 after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born April 23, 1941 in Benton county to Virgil and Mary Catherine ( Bevins) Kelly. James grew up in Van Horne and after graduating from there, Jim served in the Army.
James married Alene Dorman of Belle Plaine on March 26, 1972. They had four children: Jolene (David) Dawes of Marion, Rory Sr. (Laurie) Kelly, Jammie (Douglas) Lauterwasser, Belle Plaine, Jared (Anglea) Kelly Newhall; six grandchildren, Jenna Bush, FL ,Kelsey Dawes, IA, Rory Kelly Jr., IA, Myles Kelly, MD, Shayla Hemphill, IA and Koley Kelly, IA; and multiple great-grandchildren.
James was a member of Local 308 Carpenter's Union. He worked his career as a Union Carpenter for various companies, retiring from Rinderkecht Associates in 2004.
James enjoyed his life with wife Alene, taking many vacations together. His wisdom and wit and love of building things will be greatly missed. Jim never met a stranger for long. As any paths crossed with him, you soon became fast friends.
James was preceded in death by his late wife, Alene in 2012.
The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.
