Gerald B. “Jerry” Otting, 92, of Cascade, Iowa passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024 at Accura Healthcare in Cascade, Iowa.
Friends and relatives of Jerry may call from 3 to 7 p.m., on Thursday, May 30, 2024 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa, where a prayer service will be held at 2:30 p.m. and KC Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also continue after 9 a.m. on Friday, May 31st at the funeral home.
Services for Jerry will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa, with Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa.
He was born April 7, 1932 in Cascade, Iowa son of Joseph A. and Anna H. (Soppe) Otting. He received his education in the former St. Mary’s School in Cascade. On May 4, 1957 he was united in marriage to Joan McGovern at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa.
He was co-owner of Cigrand Bros. John Deere Implement in Cascade until his retirement. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed hiking in the woods, and was a devoted care taker of a large garden. The couple enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona, with the many friends they had there.
Jerry was a Veteran, having served in the Army during the Korean War. He is a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade. He was very active in the Community and volunteered for various committees; the Cascade American Legion Post #528, the Cascade Chamber of Commerce for which he served as Past President, the Cascade Fire Department, the Cascade Knights of Columbus-Council #930 and the Cascade Sportsman.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan Otting of Cascade, IA; five children, Jill (Kenny) Ehlers and Thomas Otting both of Cascade, IA, Jennifer (Jon) Metzen of Center Point, IA, Maribeth “Betsy” (Brian) Kramer of Hopkinton, IA and Michael (Michaela) Otting of Cascade, IA; 15 grandchildren; eight Great grandchildren and one on the way; two step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren; two sisters-in-laws, Jean Ann Otting, Jean Otting, Betty Leibold all of Cascade, IA, Sr. Ann McGovern of Canton, OH, Linda Manternach of Dubuque, IA, and Bob (Cheryl) McGovern of Verona, WI.
He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Bill (Madonna) , Jim (Grace) , Bob, Don, and Fr. Loras Otting; three sisters, Betty (Cliff) Woerdehoff, Rosemary Otting, and Joanne Otting; one niece, Lisa Otting and three nephews, Bob Woerdehoff, John Otting and Dave Otting; and his in-laws, Buddy and Georgene McGovern, Jackie and Buddy Trumm, Louie Leibold, Faith and Bob Kelly, Tom McGovern, Donna and Merlin Reinke, Urban Manternach and Marie and Kenny Green.
