UTV crash kills 13-year-old, injures another child in Poweshiek County

A 13-year-old was killed and an 11-year-old was injured in a UTV crash in rural Poweshiek County Friday evening.

The crash happened at about 5:20 p.m. Friday when the 11-year-old driver of a Polaris Ranger Crew utility vehicle lost control while negotiating a curve, according to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol.

The vehicle was traveling south on 230th Street, turning onto 450th Avenue southeast of the town of Guernsey. The vehicle rolled onto the driver’s side into the north ditch.

The 13-year-old passenger was killed in the crash. The 11-year-old driver was injured, and transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics via AirCare.

Neither child has been identified.

The crash is being investigated by the Iowa State Patrol, which was assisted by the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Montezuma Ambulance, Deep River Fire and the Poweshiek County Medical Examiner.
