CECILIA MARIE MERSHON
Cedar Rapids
Cecilia Marie Mershon, 89, died Aug. 21, 2018, at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital. She was born on Feb. 4, 1929, in rural Elkader, Iowa, to Hubert and Rose (Hess) Zapf.
Marie was a farm girl growing up and she graduated from St. John's High School in 1946. Upon graduation, Marie moved to Cedar Rapids and began working for Iowa Electric Light and Power, where she met her husband, Rodney. They married in 1951 and began their family; that is when Marie began her career as a mom and homemaker. Marie's family was very important to her and she was involved in all the children's activities, volunteering at school for whatever was asked of her. She enjoyed needlework, was an accomplished seamstress, and enjoyed reading and jigsaw puzzles. She was known to put out quite the spread of Christmas goodies around the holidays.
Marie is survived by her children, Patricia Mershon, Peggy (Richard) DesCamps and Robert Mershon; sister, Jeannette Pasker; two stepgrandchildren; and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rodney Mershon; and brother-in-law, Leo Pasker.
A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Aug. 27, at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, 4200 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids. A private family burial will follow.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Hiawatha Care Center.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Mary Anne Nelson and the staff at the Hiawatha Care Center for all the love and care given to Marie.
