All 32 Iowa high school boys’ state soccer spots were taken Wednesday night in substate finals across the state. Here’s a look at the scores, plus a few notes from each class.
Class 4A boys’ soccer substate scores and notes
No. 1 Johnston 6, Sioux City East 2
No. 3 Waukee Northwest 3, Southeast Polk 0
No. 2 West Des Moines Dowling 5, Ames 0
No. 4 Iowa City West 6, Dubuque Hempstead 0
No. 7 Pleasant Valley 1, No. 6 Bettendorf 0
No. 8 Ankeny 2, Linn-Mar 1 (5-3 PK)
No. 10 Iowa City High 2, No. 9 Des Moines Roosevelt 1
No. 5 West Des Moines Valley 3, Urbandale 2
• Johnston (17-2) is back to defend its state title as the top-ranked team in Class 4A. The Dragons beat Iowa City West in double-overtime in last year’s final.
• Johnston is ranked No. 1, but No. 2 West Des Moines Dowling (17-2) is the CIML champion. Five of the CIML’s nine teams are in this field; three others lost in substate finals, including two against conference foes.
• Iowa City West (19-2) is making its record 24th trip to state and will seek to extend its record state championship total to 10 next week. West Des Moines Valley (18-3) remains one behind with 23 state tournament appearances.
• Iowa City High (12-3) exorcised some substate demons in its win over Des Moines Roosevelt (12-5) at Mediacom Stadium. The Little Hawks had lost in this round four straight seasons after their most-recent trip to state in 2018, the last three by a goal apiece. Now City High is state bound for the 13th time.
• Pleasant Valley (15-2) lost 7-2 to rival Bettendorf (15-4) on April 15 but got the last laugh against the Mississippi Athletic Conference champion in the postseason. The Spartans have never lost a state tournament game; they won it all in their two previous appearances (2021 and 2022).
Class 3A boys’ soccer substate scores and notes
Storm Lake 2, Le Mars 0
No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier 4, Washington 0
No. 8 Marion 5, Clear Creek Amana 0
No. 9 Cedar Rapids Washington 4, No. 3 Adel ADM 0
No. 4 Dallas Center-Grimes 7, No. 10 Newton 0
No. 6 Norwalk 1, Carlisle 0
No. 2 Des Moines Hoover 5, North Polk 0
Indianola 2, Sioux City West 1 (OT)
• Cedar Rapids Xavier (10-5) broke a tie with Bettendorf with its 21st state tournament berth, third most all-time.
• Marion’s current streak of four consecutive substate titles is the most among this year’s Class 3A field. The Wolves are 14-4 this year.
• Cedar Rapids Washington (11-7) was once 5-6, but has scored 39 goals in its last seven games, six of them wins. The Warriors were the lone 3A team to win on the road Wednesday night and will head to state for the first time since 2019.
• Class 3A is assured a new champion after Iowa City Liberty’s unconventional loss to Carlisle (10-7) in the substate semifinals. Tied 4-4 in the second overtime period, a Lightning (5-9) player was shown a second yellow card and thus an automatic red. That was the fourth Liberty red card of the season, resulting in an immediate forfeit due to an IHSAA rule. Coach Matt Harding compiled a video of the red cards here. “None of our reds this year were for fighting, recklessly endangering an opponent, taunting, swearing at an opponent or official,” Harding wrote on X. “What exactly are the administrators in charge hoping to accomplish by excluding my boys from participating in the soccer postseason?”
• Norwalk (11-8), runner-up to Liberty last year, eliminated Carlisle and is state bound for the 15th time, sixth most all-time.
• Class 3A’s top-ranked team won’t be in Des Moines either after suffering its own unconventional loss (and its only loss of the season) in the substate semifinals. No. 1 Council Bluffs Lewis Central (16-1) and Sioux City West (6-10) were tied 1-1 when their game was suspended due to weather in double-overtime Monday night. They returned Tuesday, where West won in a penalty shootout. That set up a substate final between a pair of teams with losing records and Indianola (6-13) advanced for the first time.
• Dallas Center-Grimes (14-4) is the champion of the Little Hawkeye Conference, which has three teams in the 3A bracket.
Class 2A boys’ soccer substate scores and notes
No. 5 Sioux City Heelan 2, No. 10 Sioux Center 0
No. 4 Webster City 4, Clear Lake 0
Center Point-Urbana 3, No. 7 AP-DNH United 2 (OT)
No. 3 Decorah 3, DeWitt Central 0
Davenport Assumption 1, No. 6 Williamsburg 0
No. 1 Gilbert 3, Knoxville 0
No. 9 Perry 4, No. 8 Humboldt 1
No. 2 Glenwood 4, Carroll 0
• Reigning Class 2A champion Gilbert (17-0) is trying to become the first undefeated, untied state champion since Waukee in 2019.
• Decorah (15-3) has the longest stretch between state tournament bids among this year’s field, last appearing in 2010.
• A golden goal on the road sent Center Point-Urbana (11-4) to state for the second year in a row. This time, senior Brody Behrens gave the Stormin’ Pointers a 3-2 victory over AP-DNH United (14-5). It was Drew Schellhorn in a 1-0 win over Decorah last year.
Class 1A boys’ soccer substate scores and notes
No. 4 Western Christian 3, Unity Christian 2
No. 7 West Sioux 3, Underwood 1
No. 8 Hudson 1, No. 9 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck 0
No. 3 North Fayette Valley 2, Postville 1
No. 5 West Liberty 1, Tipton 0
No. 1 West Branch 6, Mediapolis 0
No. 2 Iowa City Regina 2, Mid-Prairie 0
Van Meter 2, West Central Valley 1
• The River Valley Conference has three of the eight 1A state qualifiers this year, and two of them beat conference mates in the substate finals: West Liberty (12-5) got revenge against Tipton (11-6) after the Tigers won the regular-season meeting by the same 1-0 scoreline, and Iowa City Regina (15-3) got past Mid-Prairie (10-8) for the second time this year. Regina’s 16 appearances are the fifth most all-time and its eight titles are tied for second most.
• Like Gilbert in 2A, RVC champion West Branch (18-0) is attempting to become the first undefeated, untied state champion since Waukee in 2019. The last 1A team to do it was Dyersville Beckman in 2016. The Bears made their first state tournament appearance last year and now seek their first win. They beat both West Liberty and Regina for the first time this year, both in overtime.
• North Fayette Valley (15-3) came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat Postville (14-4) and advance to state for the third time in four years.
• Van Meter (14-5) and West Sioux (12-3) both qualified for the first time.
• Reigning champion Western Christian (12-4) is back at state for the fourth year in a row.
