AMES — Rain and the threat of continued storms forced the cancellation of the second and final round of the boys’ spring golf state tournaments.
According to the Iowa High School Athletic Association postseason manual, if an 18-hole round is completed and the next round is canceled the first 18 holes will determine the winner.
Dyersville Beckman and senior Luke Harwick finished the opening round with the lead, which resulted in a Class 2A title sweep in a weather-shortened tournament Tuesday at Coldwater Golf Links. The 3A tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course and 1A championships at Ames Golf and Country Club were also wiped out after one round.
The Blazers fired a team total of 306, edging Pella Christian by one stroke. A tight team race saw the top-four teams separated by just three strokes. Grundy Center was third at 308 and Waterloo Columbus was fourth at 309.
After back-to-back state runner-up finishes, Beckman captured its first team championship. Harwick led all scorers with a 68. Thomas Thier and Mitchell Randall tied for 16th with 78 apiece and Jacob Wegmann’s 82 rounded out the Blazers’ winning score.
Harwick, who was the individual runner-up in 2022, fired 3-under to win Beckman’s second individual crown. He topped Ida Grove OABCIG’s Axton Miller by one shot.
Harwick joins former teammate Nate Offerman, who won medalist honors in 2021, which was also shortened to one round due to weather.
In Class 3A, Solon’s Isaiah Zoske earned his third top-10 finish. The Spartans junior shot 4-under 68 Monday and claimed runner-up honors. Easton Korell carded 6-under 66 for the individual title.
Defending state champion Roman Roth, of Washignton (Iowa) was forced to settle for a third-place tie. He posted 1-under 71, matching Nevada’s Parker Rodgers and MOC-Floyd Valley’s Carson Korver.
Independence sophomore Dawson Fuelling tied for ninth with 77.
Adel ADM won the 3A team title with 304. The Demons scored 321 to place fifth. Marion qualified for state as a team for the first time since 2006. The Wolves were sixth with 326.
Boyden-Hull won the 1A team title, recording a 300. Keota tied for sixth with 334, while South Winneshiek was eighth at 337. Keith Thompson secured medalist honors with 2-under 69. He edged Anita CAM’s runner-up Chase Jahde by one stroke.
