Former Cedar Rapids school employee accused of providing minors with marijuana, vapes

May. 20, 2024 3:53 pm
CEDAR RAIDS — A former employee at the Polk Alternative Education Center has been arrested on charges that she provided or indicated she would provide marijuana and vape products to minors.
Kiara Mourning, 29, faces two counts of contribution to the delinquency of a minor.
According to a criminal complaint, she had contact with two minors over text and in-person between October and March when she told them she would provide them with marijuana and nicotine vape products. The complaint does not say how she knew them.
The Cedar Rapids Community School District was made aware of the allegations against Mourning on 11 a.m. Feb. 21 and the matter was reported to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, according to a statement from the district. Mourning resigned from her job as a special education interventionist at Polk that day.
“CRCSD takes the safety and well-being of our students extremely seriously and will not tolerate any behavior that puts them at risk,” the district said in a statement. “We will continue to act urgently and diligently in response to incidents that threaten this.”
A warrant was issued April 17 for Mourning’s arrest and she was arrested Friday. She was released from the Linn County Jail after posting $1,000 bail.
