Solon’s Aly Stahle stays cool, wins 3A 100-meter hurdles at state track and field meet
State track and field, Class 3A girls: Western Dubuque lives up to top seed in 4x100

DES MOINES — As the Saturday afternoon temperature climbed into the mid-80s, Aly Stahle searched for the most comfortable place she could find.
She chilled out in a Drake Stadium restroom.
“Hey, it was cool in there,” she said.
Then the Solon High School junior made the way back outside, laced up her spikes and won the Class 3A girls’ 100-meter hurdles at the state track and field meet.
“I would have never thought,” Stahle said. “Last year, I was four-stepping.”
That’s not the end of it.
“I had a stress fracture during volleyball season, and it went into January or February. I wasn’t expecting to be in this spot.”
Stahle’s 15.35-second effort edged West Delaware freshman Avery Schmitz (15.44).
“I’ve put in a lot of work in the hurdles,” Schmitz said. “I was hoping for top-three. I wasn’t stressed. I was ready to run my race.”
Adel ADM captured the 3A girls’ title with 48 points. MOC-Floyd Valley and Sioux Center tied for second with 43; Mount Vernon was fourth with 41.
Maquoketa finished eighth, Solon 10th.
Western Dubuque’s crew of Ava Goins, Ava Ramler, Claire Stuntz and Brynn Walters lived up to their top seed in the 400-meter relay, winning it in 48.34 seconds.
“No better word that ‘glorious’ for this,” Stuntz said. “I had full faith in Brynn. I was screeching at the top of my lungs.”
Walters said, “We’ve been aiming for this since last winter. We trained our asses off for this.”
Ava Hocker’s stretch run lifted Williamsburg’s sprint medley relay to second place. The Raiders (1:49.29) finished behind Dubuque Wahlert (1:47.79).
“Usually, I’m thinking about turnover down the stretch,” Hocker said. “Today, I was thinking about my teammates. I really want us all to be on the podium.”
Makenna Hughes, Taylor Sanchez and Ailea Wetjen ran the first three legs for the Raiders.
Maquoketa’s Isabelle Hardin was the 1,500-meter runner-up in 4:48.14. Maquoketa (4x100) and Mount Vernon (sprint medley) earned third-place relay finishes.
