An Iowa Department of Transportation employee was struck and killed Thursday morning while working in a closed lane of Interstate 80 in Western Iowa, authorities said.
A United Parcel Service truck driven by Clifford Miller, 41, of Millerstown, Pa., was passing other traffic on the eastbound interstate in Pottawattamie County as a lane was closed for highway maintenance, according to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol.
Iowa DOT vehicles with arrows warned traffic that the left lane was closed ahead. In that closed lane, an Iowa DOT asphalt truck was working with Matthew Dickerson, 36, of Neola, outside and behind it.
According the crash report, Miller was passing other traffic after the arrow warnings and hit Dickerson in the closed lane, killing him.
Injured in the crash was Jordan Hargens, 45, of Council Bluffs, who was inside the Iowa DOT truck. His life was saved because he was wearing a seat belt, the crash report states.
The report did not describe his injuries or say if the crash was under investigation.
