Edward Victor McDermott, 64, of Cedar Rapids, IA, passed away Friday, May 3, 2024 at home. Stewart Baxter helped the family after Ed’s passing. Ed was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, but per Ed’s wishes, there will be no services. A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at The Eagles Club, 1735 11th St. NW, on Sunday, June 23 from 3 to 6 p.m.
Survivos include Leah Bond, the love of Ed’s life for 33 years; brother Michael McDermott (Shirley Matheny), sisters Kathleen, Eileen and Loreen McDermott, nephew Benjamin Dirks (Stacie Keeble), Ben’s girls Addisyn and Amelia and Ben’s son Dylan Dirks; Ed’s aunt Sara McDermott, many cousins and good friends.
Ed was born Feb. 17, 1960, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Patrick and Rita (Zobl) McDermott. Ed graduated from Washington High School in 1978. Ed worked in maintenance for several companies including Target, Rockwell Collins, CMF & Z and College Community School District. Ed was a past commander and current member of the Sons of Amvets. Ed was a huge Chicago Bears, Iowa Hawkeyes and Cedar Rapids Kernels fan.
Ed enjoyed all kinds of music, loved going to concerts and festivals, and supporting local bands. Ed never missed St. Patrick’s Day or the Iowa State Fair. A cat person, Ed liked camping, grilling and socializing. Ed liked people and was very generous. He had a great sense of humor and was always the prankster. Ed was an avid collector of all kinds of memorabilia from his many interests.
RIP Eddie, you will be truly missed.
Ed was preceded in death by his grandparents John and Rosemary McDermott, Victor and Tillie Zobl; and parents Patrick and Rita McDermott.
The family would like to thank Hospice for Ed’s care in his final days.
