John Paul Thys Sr., 76, of Victor, died on Aug. 23, 2018, due to injuries sustained in a single-car accident near Victor.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor, with the Rev. Cory Close officiating. Organist will be Verabeth Bricker and vocalist will be Beth Henning, accompanied by members of the St. Bridget choir. Pallbearers will be Adam and Paul Thys, Craig Buscher, Chris Boeding, Greg Schafbuch and Travis Wilhelm. Altar servers will be Jenna Rajtora and Sam and Alex Gensley. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Victor.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the church.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Bridget Catholic Church.
John was born on April 24, 1942, in Belle Plaine, the son of Frank and Margaret Scandridge Thys. He was raised in the Victor area and was a 1960 graduate of St. John's Catholic School in Victor.
On Dec. 28, 1963, he was united in marriage with Rita Mae Boeding in Lamont, Iowa. The couple farmed together near Victor until 1983. John then was employed with M&N Construction and Beagle Construction (owner) in Victor, and later as a grain truck driver for Brooklyn Elevator. During this span, he thoroughly enjoyed running a backhoe, whether doing work for himself or others.
John was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing and ice fishing in Nebraska and South Dakota, and watching Western movies and TV shows. For many years, John and Rita wintered in Texas.
He is survived by his children, John (Deb) Thys Jr. of Belle Plaine, Julie (Mike) Klein of Brooklyn, Joel (Dawn) Thys of Blairstown and Jeff (Stephanie) Thys of Victor; three brothers, Bob (Glenda) Thys of Tipton, Tom (Jean) Thys of Victor and Mike (Patsy) Thys of Victor; his aunt, Mary Scandridge of Brooklyn; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Rita in 2012.
