Dean Allen Brown, 77, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa was released from his pain Wednesday, May 1, at Harmony House in Cedar Rapids from complications of multiple myeloma. Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a memorial service to immediately follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for Dean, under “photos and videos,” starting at 1 p.m. Friday, May 10. Burial will take place at a later date at Memory Gardens in Iowa City, Iowa.
Dean was born February 22, 1947, in Iowa, City, the son of Darrell and Phyllis (Ingalls) Brown. He grew up in North Liberty, Iowa and graduated from City High in Iowa City in 1965. Dean was an accomplished long-distance runner, competing at the Drake Relays. Dean served his country honorably in the United States Army. He started off his working career as a mechanic and held roles at Seger Engineering, Link Belt, Goss Graphics, Clipper Wind Power and Billion Auto.
Dean was very active in many clubs including the Cedar Boat Club, serving a past commodore. He was also a former member of The Moose, Eagles Club, Isle of Iowa Parrot Head Club, Tri-County ATV Club (Wisconsin), Iowa Snow Drifters, and had his PGI Certificate for fireworks. Dean oversaw the Cedar Boat Club fireworks show for 31 years and always stressed it was a TEAM EFFORT!! During the grand finale of the Cedar Boat Club’s 2024 fireworks show, Dean will light up the sky one last time.
Dean is survived by his beloved companion of 28 years, Karen Coonrod of Cedar Rapids, and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Saundra (Leroy) Nissley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family for a memorial fund that has been established in Dean’s name.
