James E. Hunter, 66, of Monticello, Iowa passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City after a brief illness.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello, Iowa. Funeral Mass will commence at 12 p.m with Rev. Paul Baldwin officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
Jim was born on November 19, 1957, in John McDonald Hospital in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Fred and Lorraine (Sternhagen) Hunter. He graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School in 1977. He worked at Energy Manufacturing for 42 years until retiring in 2022. He was active with the UAW, serving as president, vice president, and many terms on the Shop Committee. He was also a part of “CAP,” lobbying on the local and national levels.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was more than happy to help family, friends, and neighbors with any kind of project. He also enjoyed garage sales, lighting fireworks, spending time in his shop, and enjoying fires with Leo.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Deb, children: Jessica Hunter of West Branch, Butch (Stacey) Hunter of Lisbon, Jalyse (Ryan) Schwahl of Spanish Fort, AL, Jennifer (Reggie) Hosier of Edgerton, WI, Mikki (Kraig) Manternach and Jarod (Kiana Secrist) McElmeel both of Monticello; grandchildren: Jackson, Emersyn, Ethan, Wyatt, Rivington, Sam, Aspen, Riley, Karli, and Madyx, siblings: Fred Jr. (Linda), Steve (Donna), Bob (Deborah) Dave (Dawn), Lana, Paul (Julie) and Don (Wendy), and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws: Donald and Helen Ploessl, Jeff Ploessl.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the doctors and nurses in the SNICU at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for their excellent care.
