It’s a season of adjustment for Kennedy’s Addison Swartzendruber
With her twin Sidney Swartzendruber out this season with a stress fracture, Addison has ‘to take accountability myself.’

MARION — Of course it’s an adjustment.
“It’s a lot different this year,” Addison Swartzendruber said. “In workouts, I have to take accountability myself.”
Swartzendruber has had two major identities in her four years at Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
On the track. And as a twin.
She still has both, but this spring, they aren’t intertwined.
Her twin, Sidney Swartzendruber, is out of commission this season due to a stress fracture.
“In workouts, I don’t have her to push me,” Addison said. “But she is still part of the team and supports us when she can.”
If there’s a silver lining to all of this, it’s that Swartzendruber is transitioning to life as an individual on the track. She will head to Oregon State University next year; Sidney has committed to Colorado State.
“It will be good for both of us,” Addison said. “We will get to experience what it’s like to be truly individuals.”
Monday night was the Marion Invitational track and field meet, an event wedged between last weekend’s Drake Relays and the upcoming conference meets, most of which are Thursday.
Swartzendruber anchored Kennedy to titles in the sprint medley relay and the 1,600-meter relay.
“It was good to get back into the rhythm,” she said. “We wanted to use this meet as a preview of what’s to come. The next couple of days, we’ll take it easy, then we’ll be ready to go.”
Despite running a skeleton lineup, Solon claimed the girls’ title Monday while Center Point-Urbana was the boys’ champion.
Bolstered by titles from Kate Shafer (discus), Hailey Miller (long jump) and Sydney Dee (1,500) — along with a winning 3,200-meter relay — Solon registered 128 points. Kennedy was second with 114.
CPU got 1-2 finishes in the boys’ 200, 400 and 800, then capped the night with a 1,600-meter relay title.
“The 400 was just all right,” said Peyton Stowers, who won that event in 51.73 seconds, then anchored the Stormin’ Pointers’ 1,600 relay that ran 3:30.16. “The relay was better because the wind calmed down.”
Center Point-Urbana scored 135 points; Benton Community was second with 111.
Stowers was followed by teammate Jack Witte in the 400. Cooper Grimm and Blayze Havel took the top two spots in the 800, then A.J. Maloney and Nathan Miller did likewise in the 200.
