Donald H. Meek, 82, of Cape Coral, FL and Cedar Rapids, IA passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral after a long battle with congestive heart failure. In his last months he expressed that he was ready to go “home,” meaning home to Heaven, to Jesus, and to his departed wife Sue.
Don was born on December 27, 1941, to Miranda and Howard Meek of Shellsburg and Cedar Rapids, IA.
He graduated from George Washington High School in Cedar Rapids and upon graduation enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Don was a very proud Navy Veteran who always had a great love for the U.S. Military.
After serving in the Navy, he returned to Cedar Rapids and attended Coe College. He worked at several companies where he was able to apply his engineering skills before going off on his own in the construction industry. Don partnered with two of his friends in the ’70s to start a home building company, AABI. Don later became President of the Home Builders Association. He then opened his own home building company, DMB (Donald Meek Builders) and in the early ’80s started a masonry restoration company, TSS (Technical Specialty Systems). In the mid ’80s Don focused solely on TSS where he served as President/Owner and was still “hands on” until the time of his death. Don also managed the Meek Family Farm which has been in the family for over 125 years.
Don married Sue on September 10, 1966, and in August of 1968 they welcomed their daughter Kathy. Don and Sue were the most loving parents and enjoyed raising Kathy in Cedar Rapids. In 2003 they decided to escape the cold Iowa winters and built a home in Cape Coral where he and Sue enjoyed having “cocktail time” on their lanai, having friends over, going out on their boat, loving on their two dogs Mac and Mimi, and going to visit their daughter and grandson as often as they could. While living in Cape Coral Don served as Chief Engineer for the restoration of the local Iwo Jima Monument. Don was named an honorary Marine at the rededication ceremony when the restoration of the monument was presented to the town of Cape Coral in 2012. His proud wife Sue was present for this event along with many WWII Veterans. After the loss of Sue in 2018, Don traveled often between Cedar Rapids and Cape Coral, visiting with his many friends and family.
Preceding Don in death was his beloved wife of 51 years Susan J. (Hirschfeld) Meek, his parents Howard and Miranda Meek, his in-laws Alfred and Winifred Hirschfeld and his brother-in-law Donald Hirschfeld. He is survived by his daughter Kathryn S. Marquis (Peter) and grandson Jack P. Marquis of Dallas, TX, his sister Carol Meek Tasler (Bob), and his brother-in-law Robert L. Hirschfeld (Margaret).
A celebration of life will be held at a date and location to be determined in the coming months. Details will be posted on Facebook and provided via email.
