No track, all field for Williamsburg’s Derek Weisskopf
Prep track and field: He wins the high jump and discus at the Bobcat Invitational, and nearly adds the shot put title

VAN HORNE — Where’s Weisskopf?
From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on a track night, the options are many.
Don’t bother looking inside the fence surrounding the track. That’s unlikely. His duties are elsewhere.
“It’s a little stressful,” said Williamsburg senior Derek Weisskopf, field-event wizard. “I’ve got to make sure I’m checked in at every spot.”
At Thursday’s Bobcat Invitational track and field meet at Bobcat Stadium, it was the discus, the high jump and the shot put, in succession.
He won two of the three events and was edged in the other (the shot put) by tie-breaker. That effort helped Williamsburg sweep the team titles.
The Raiders edged Center Point-Urbana, 110-107, for the boys’ title. Williamsburg’s girls compiled 136 points, outscoring runner-up Vinton-Shellsburg by 25.
A University of Iowa football recruit, Weisskopf unloaded a distance of 180 feet, 4 inches in the discus.
“The wind really helped,” he said. “The wind was coming out of the northwest, and it really helped the right-handed throwers.”
Weisskopf passed on his final three attempts and headed inside the Benton gymnasium to escape the late-afternoon shower, and also to compete in the high jump.
There, he cleared 6 feet, 2 inches and stopped at that point with the title secure.
Then it was the shot put. His effort of 53-3 was matched by Brady McDonald of Independence, with McDonald claiming the title with a superior second-best throw.
So, Derek, why not try the long jump and go for an individual field-event sweep sometime?
You’d think with Weisskopf’s explosiveness, that would be a fit.
“I asked Coach (Matt) Matthes if I could practice the long jump, and he doesn’t think it’s a good idea,” Weisskopf said. “I wish I could try it. Oh well.”
At last year’s state meet, Weisskopf was the Class 2A champion in the high jump, the runner-up in the shot put and placed seventh in the discus.
Oelwein has a new school record-holder in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles: Garet Kiel — formerly a co-owner of the mark at 14.90 seconds — lowered it to 14.76 Thursday.
“It felt smooth and pretty fast,” Kiehl said. “I only hit one of (the hurdles).”
Kiel also brought the Huskies from behind to win the shuttle hurdle relay.
“I love running people down in the shuttle,” he said. “I see that guy ahead of me, and I want to go get him.”
CPU won five boys’ events; Williamsburg and Oelwein won four apiece.
Williamsburg’s girls took home five golds. The Raiders captured the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays, with freshman Ava Hocker anchoring all three.
