Eunice M. Mahoney, 94, of Independence, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, at Keystone Cedars Assisted Living Center in Cedar Rapids.
Eunice was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Dyers-ville, Iowa, the daughter of William J. and Rita C. (Milbert) Fangman. She attended country schools in rural Dyersville. While working for Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids, she attended Paris Academy of Cosmetology. After graduating, she worked as a cosmetologist for several years in Cedar Rapids. On Nov. 25, 1948, she married LaVerne Francis Mahoney at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monti. They made their home in rural Troy Mills, where they rented and operated their farm for many years. They moved to Independence in 1990.
She was an active member of both St. Patrick's in Monti and St. John's Catholic churches, where she was a member of the Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Sew & Sews. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Ryan.
Eunice is survived by her children, Neal Mahoney, Independence, Marscia Mahoney, Saltillo, Miss., Cheryl (Bill) Adam, Waukon, Larry (June) Mahoney, Meadows Place, Texas, Mary (Mike) Mahoney-Lafever, Bettendorf, and Pat (Angela) Mahoney, Troy Mills; her eight grandchildren, Courtney Adam, Callie (Travis) Youngblut, Ashley (Mark) Kaiser, Tanner Lafever, Mallory Lafever, Amber Mahoney, Heather Mahoney and Ireland Mahoney; two stepgrandchildren, Lisa Vogel and Tyler Oar; a great-grandchild, Jackson Kaiser; a brother, Dr. John Fangman, Edina, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Lucean Fangman; and many nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents, William J. and Rita C. Fangman; her husband, LaVerne F. Mahoney; two sisters, Rose Mary Offerman and Ruth Hearn; and three brothers, Bill Fangman, Dan Fangman and Dick Fangman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence with the Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Monti. A reception will be held at the Monti Hall following the burial. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Reiff Family Center in Independence.
