CEDAR RAPIDS — David Vanderhamm, 39, of Cedar Rapids was killed Saturday night in an officer-involved shooting, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
Vanderhamm called 911 at 6:37 p.m. Saturday asking police to respond to his residence on 31st Street NE. A second man also called 911, asking police to perform a welfare check on Vanderhamm, according to a news release. Investigators said it was reported that Vanderhamm was making homicidal and suicidal remarks.
Vanderhamm had a weapon and was with the other man when police approached. Officers told him to drop the weapon, authorities said, but he raised it in their direction. Three officers shot at him, and he died on the scene.
The other man was also hit by gunfire and was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, the release states. The department’s Division of Criminal Investigation, which is investigating the shooting, declined Monday to release the injured man’s name.
The names of the officers involved in the shooting will be released after the officers have been interviewed as part of the investigation.
