Daniel Dean "Grubby" Garoutte, 75, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Graveside military services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg, with military rites conducted by the Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post No. 166 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Shellsburg American Legion Post No. 166. The family also requests casual attire for those attending the services and reception to follow at the Shellsburg Legion Hall. Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is in charge of arrangements. Daniel Dean Garoutte was born Feb. 2, 1943, in Correctionville. Thomas and Margaret (Boyer) Garoutte adopted young Dan around the age of 7. He graduated from Sioux City East High School, where he held the school record for the mile run for many years. Dan served his country in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division and was honorably discharged in 1966. "Grubby," as he was known to everyone he met, was a member of the Sioux City 4 Wheelers and enjoyed racing Jeeps off road, hill climbs and mud drag races. Grubby was a member of the Boilermakers Local No. 83 Union since 1977 and retired in 2002. He was a member of the Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post No. 166 of Shellsburg.

Grubby is survived by his son, Tim (Jennifer) Garoutte of Columbia, Tenn; his longtime companion, Nancy Wright-Clapson of Quebec, Canada; two adoptive daughters, Lori (Ed) Kennedy of Indianola and Jennifer (Jason) Adams of Newton; and two stepchildren, Mike (CariAnn) and Jon Bruns of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Margaret Garoutte; his wife, Vickie Garoutte; his brother, Patrick Garoutte; his adoptive daughter, Karen Coates; and his stepdaughter, Ellen Prochaska.
