Darryl Vincent Wernimont, 70, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away of a sudden illness on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, under hospice care in Florida. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
Darryl was born February 10, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the son of Harry and Mody Wernimont. Darryl was a 1972 graduate of Regis High School and later attended Mt. Mercy College.
Darryl’s outgoing personality landed him with a great group of like-minded people, he called family, at The Boar’s Head Restaurant in Cedar Rapids during the early ’70s. At the same time, Darryl was the “driving force” behind his father’s decision to buy a tavern and call it Werni’s Tap. It was a very successful 10-year adventure.
Darryl was sought after for his keen business sense which benefited corporations such as Cherry Burrell and Fluor Daniel. The Haskell Company of Jacksonville and Darryl enjoyed a decade-long association. Darryl was known as a top-notch process equipment marketing manager. He traveled the globe for years.
Darryl’s 6’5” stature left an impression wherever he went. Darryl and Gini married in 1985. Retirement was on the horizon to enjoy their years ahead at home with their 3 Chihuahuas. With the devastating diagnosis, Gini’s inner strength came to the forefront. She stayed strong through the stress and strong through the questions that had no answers. Such heartache. Darryl is survived by his loving wife Gini Wernimont, two stepsons, Matt and Justin Brosh; his uncle Lawrence McGrath of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law Winston Lear (Linda); close cousins Beth (Wernimont) Barta (Dave) and Bob Wernimont (Debby); nieces, cousins and friends.
Darryl was preceded in death by his father and mother; grandparents; many cousins; his brother-in-law Emory and many furry friends.
His best friend of 60 years, Tom Hines of Arizona, made the journey to Jacksonville to be by Darryl’s side in his final days. When Gini needed a shoulder, Tom offered her two. To all of Darryl’s friends, the family sends their heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Darryl will be greatly missed. Bless you “Big D.”
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jacksonville Humane Society, McGraw Community Hospice of Jacksonville, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
