Iowa, Utah to face off for first time since 1964 in NIT second round

Iowa’s next game: Winner faces VCU or South Florida in the quarterfinals Tuesday or Wednesday (time TBA)
Series record: Utah leads, 1-0
What to know: This is Iowa’s second game in the NIT after defeating Kansas State, 91-82, on Tuesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It is the sixth time Iowa has reached the second round of the NIT in program history.
Iowa is the No. 3 seed in its region, and Utah is the No. 2 seed. (Top-seeded Villanova has been eliminated after suffering a 70-61 loss to unseeded VCU.)
The Utes’ leading scorer is Branden Carlson. The 7-footer is averaging 17.2 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game while shooting 49.9 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from 3-point range.
“He’s a really good player,” Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said of Carlson. “Very versatile, long, stretches the floor, really talented.”
Iowa could host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday or Wednesday with a win over Utah. The NIT semifinals and championship game will take place at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on April 2 and 4.
