John "B.J." Cook, 48, passed away Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St. in Vinton. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, also at the funeral home. A celebration of B.J.'s life will be held at the Urbana Fire Station following the memorial service.
B.J. was born on Aug. 6, 1970, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Jerry and Marcia (Boyles) Cook. He graduated from Urbana High School with the Class of 1989. He graduated from Kirkwood Community College with a degree in wastewater treatment. B.J. had worked for Farmstead Foods, Hunter Specialties, Whirlpool-Amana, the maintenance department of the City of Urbana and ADM. He currently was employed at Quaker Oats. He was a member of the Urbana Ambulance Service as an EMT-A for 20 years and was a volunteer fireman with the Urbana Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. B.J. enjoyed grilling and waterball competitions and was an avid deer hunter.
In addition to his parents, Jerry and Marcia, he is survived by his brothers, Mark Cook of Glenwood, Iowa, and Matthew (Jenny) Cook and James (Stephanie) Cook, all of Cedar Rapids; and his niece and nephews, Lindsey (Dane) Peterson, Zac Hornung and Zach Cook.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ralph and Eva Cook; and his maternal grandparents, Howard and Geraldine Boyles.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left for the Urbana Firefighters Association.
