Minnesota is NIT-bound, and other Big Ten teams will soon follow
The number of teams in the hunt for automatic berths in the NCAA men’s basketball tournamenthat has shrunk from 362 to 137

(Through Thursday, 5 p.m.)
There was no home-city advantage for the Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball team Thursday, and there will be no NCAA tournament for them, either.
Minnesota lost at Target Center in Minneapolis to Michigan State Thursday, 77-67. The Gophers led at halftime, but halftime doesn’t pay the bills.
And then there were 137 survivors for automatic berths in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Minnesota is 18-14, much better than it was last year. But that still spells NIT. Teams that need to do some winning in Minneapolis to get to the NCAA tourney rather than the NIT are Indiana, Iowa, Ohio State and Penn State.
There are 362 Division I men’s basketball teams. Here is the roll call of those that are locked into the NCAA tournament, those on hold, and those who definitely will not be getting at-large berths:
