Bubble bath: NCAA men’s tournament bids adieu to many Wednesday, like Virginia Tech
The number of teams in the hunt for automatic berths in the NCAA men’s basketball tournamenthat has shrunk from 362 to 160

(Through Wednesday)
And then there were 160 survivors for automatic berths in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Virginia Tech quickly dismissed itself as an NCAA at-large contender with its 86-76 loss to Florida State Wednesday afternoon in the ACC second-round.
Wake Forest, on the other hand, took care of business by getting its 20th win, 72-59 over Notre Dame. Another ACC team, Syracuse, said sayonara after getting rocked by NC State.
The ACC tourney is in Washington, D.C., home of zero ACC teams. Washington is the home of Big East, Atlantic 10, Mid-Eastern Athletic and Patriot League schools, and the Big Ten is just up the road in College Park, Md. None of them are holding their tourneys in D.C.
TCU (21-11) solidified its standing with a 77-70 win over Oklahoma in the Big 12 tourney. The Sooners (20-12), though, may be nervous. They have lost six of their last eight games.
The Indiana State Sycamores waiting to learn Sunday if they get in the Field of 68, can thank the Hokies and other bubble teams who fail this week. Sycamores and Hokies. Trees and turkeys.
There are 362 Division I men’s basketball teams. Here is the roll call of those that are locked into the NCAA tournament, those on hold, and those who definitely will not be getting at-large berths:
