MARGERY DEVEE SMITH

Margery Devee Smith passed away Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab Center in Vinton. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 516 Second Ave., Vinton. The family will receive friends one hour before the service Saturday at the church. Private family interment will be held at a later date at the Troy Mills Cemetery. Marge was born to Carl and Ella Schaffer on April 29, 1924, on the family farm near Alburnett. She attended schools in Alburnett from kindergarten to high school, graduating with the Class of 1942. Marge was united in marriage to Milton A. Smith on July 3, 1943, in Central City. The couple resided in Linn and Benton counties all of their married lives. They settled in Vinton, where they raised their family and were longtime members of Wesley United Methodist Church. They enjoyed traveling and between 1990 and 2000, they pulled their camping trailer to Sleepy Valley Ranch in Mission, Texas, every winter. There, they enjoyed the warm weather, playing cards, seeing old friends and making and new ones. Marge and Milt were married for 70 years.
Marge is survived by her son, Phillip E. (Martha) Smith of Cedar Rapids; her daughter, Patricia A. Hoover of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton A. Smith; her son, William H. Smith; and her son-in-law, Richard Hoover.
