Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and to the followers of the Islamic faith. It is the most holy time in the year for Muslims. Families and Muslim communities adorn their homes and Mosques with lights and decorations in celebration of the holy month.
During Ramadan the Mosque is open every night for an Iftar meal or to break after their day of fasting with families and friends in the community. Late Evening prayers, called Taraweeh Prayers, are prayed every night in the Mosque during Ramadan to praise and offer Gratitude for God’s Blessings throughout the year. Ramadan is a time of spiritual focus and renewal of our priorities.
Muslims are required to practice self-awareness during the month and as much as possible try to better themselves by eliminating bad habits and creating good ones. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims increase their giving to charity, increase their good deeds, connect with family and friends, and care for the needy and less fortunate.
When Muslims abstain from eating, drinking liquids and other physical need from dawn to sunset each day, they connect with those who experience hunger and thirst on a daily basis all year long from poverty and food insecurity. This Ramadan is a reminder of hope and sanctity. Hope in God who taught us in the Quran, as well as in scriptures and revelations, to not despair and to arm ourselves against trials and tribulations with hope and faith. Light has always stood for hope in all religious and human traditions. It is this light of hope we wish this Ramadan will bring upon us.
Ramadan will commence on Monday, March 11 and will conclude on Tuesday, April 9 with the holiday celebration on Wednesday, April 10.
May this Ramadan be a Blessed time with Peace, Hope and Goodness for all.
