Shirley Douthart, age 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 29, 2024, at her home in Shellsburg, with her family by her side.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday March 6, 2024, at Springs of Life Church, 2300 26th Street NW in Cedar Rapids, with Revs. Marty & Jaleda Schminkey, and Chad & Lindsay Garrison officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. A private family interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg following a meal at the church.
Shirley was born April 7, 1936, in Iowa, to James and Lois Mae (Graham) O’Brian. She received her B.A, from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, and her Masters in English from Parson’s college in Fairfield. Shirley was a long-time teacher at Cedar Rapids Christian School. Shirley was very active in the Foursquare Church throughout her life. She played Piano and was the choir director for many years. She very much enjoyed directing the many children’s programs held at the church. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening.
Shirley is survived by her children, Brent Douthart of Shellsburg, Brenda (Eric) Ferry of Meridian, MS; 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, her brothers, Larry (Darlene) O’Brian, and Don (Dee) O’Brian, all of Shellsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
