SANDRA LEA (STEPHENSON) HYNDS

Sandra Lea (Stephenson) Hynds, 77, of Williamsburg, died Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. Visitation with family present will precede the service at
10 a.m. Inurnment will be 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg and follows a lunch and time for fellowship. Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg is caring for Sandra and her family. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
Sandra was born Feb. 23, 1941, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Mildred (McCallum) Stephenson. She graduated from Ames High School in 1959 and received her R.N. in 1962 from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids. She attended UNI for course work in nursing in a school setting and established the school nurse program at Farragut (Iowa) Community School District, where she worked for two years prior to moving to Williamsburg, where she served as school nurse for 23 years. She was a member of the Iowa School Nurses Association and the National School Nurse Association. She maintained her hospital skills by working part time and summers for 36 years at Marengo Memorial Hospital.
Sandra married William F. Hynds on June 29, 1963, in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, where she served as ruling elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and volunteered on numerous church committees. Sandra enjoyed many hobbies, including scrapbooking, making quilts for her grandchildren and reading. A great joy for her was having her grandchildren visit for a week each summer.
She is survived by her husband, Bill of Williamsburg; sons, Tim (Amy) Hynds of Sioux City and Robert Hynds of Coralville; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Nathan of Sioux City; brother, Robert (Nancy) Stephenson of Trappe, Md.; two sisters Cindy Knakal of Wake Forest, N.C., and Mary (Don) Constantin of Charleston, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and
brother-in-law, George Knakal.
The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the staff of Highland Ridge Care Center, Iowa City Hospice and to Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for the care Sandra received.
In lieu of flowers, Sandra requested memorials to First Presbyterian Church of Williamsburg's youth mission trip fund, Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or Iowa City Hospice.
