Phyllis Jean Grommon, 84, of Marion, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Feb 28, 2024, at St. Luke’s Helen G. Nassif Transitional Care Center, Cedar Rapids. Honoring Phyllis’ wishes, no services will be held. Burial will take place at a later date at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, assisted the family.
Phyllis was born August 4, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Delta (Kersten) Cepowski. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1957. On June 1, 1958, Phyllis was united in marriage to Thomas Grommon, Sr. at Sinclair Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 1, 2023. Phyllis was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. She and her husband enjoyed attending the Cedar Rapids Walk to Emmaus #1 and #2 and served as team members in later walks. Phyllis taught herself to crochet, knit, and needlepoint. She was also an active leader for Bluebird and Campfire Girls for many years.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Grommon, Sr.; children, Thomas Jr. (Shannon) Grommon, Lisa Grommon, Dawn (Mark) Young, and Amy March; grandchildren, Jana (Matt), Hailey (Dane), Harrison (Kate), Sarah, Emily (Luke), Taylor, Kersten, and TJ; great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Hewitt, Jonah, Ruby, and Maeve; and sister, Linda (Don) Krauss.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Terry Cepowski.
