DONALD MEYER HEINS

Donald Meyer Heins, 87, of Postville, died Friday, July 13, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Donald Meyer was born April 6, 1931, to Leo and Mabel (Meyer) Heins, at the home farm in Postville, Iowa. He was baptized on May 31, 1931, and confirmed in April 1945. Don graduated from Postville High School. In high school, Don participated in both basketball and football. In his senior year, Don's football team went undefeated and unscored upon. Later in life, Don was inducted into the Postville Athletic Hall of Fame. He "served" one day in the U.S. Army. Due to impaired hearing, he was unable to pass the physical requirements for the military.
Don was united in marriage to DeElta Buraas on Aug. 27, 1950, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He worked as a farmer his entire life and was also a salesman for Trojan Seed Corn and livestock supplements. Don was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, the Tri-City Golf Club, president of D.H.I.H (Dairy Herd Implement Association), Postville Bowling Association Hall of Fame, Elk's Club No. 2495 in Florida BPOE, and also a member of the Eagles Club in Florida. He lived on the home farm from 1931 to 1977, then moved to a house near the Tri-City Golf course until 1993, before moving to his home in Luana. He also wintered in Sarasota, Fla. Don enjoyed many hobbies. He loved sports, golfing, bowling, playing cards and dancing with his beloved wife, DeElta.
Don is survived by his children, Jamie (Lyle) Schulte of Swisher and Jill (Mike) Haire of North Port, Fla.; his four grandchildren, Tiffany (Christian) Mangelsen of Wheaton, Ill., Tyler Heins of Vail, Colo., Austin Haire and Dillon (Emily) Haire of North Port, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Gracyn and Drew; one sister, Dorothy (Ray) Suckow; other family members, Dean (Laurel) Ohloff, Aaron (Stephanie) Ohloff, Seth (Beth) Ohloff and Arica Ohloff and son, Dawson; and countless nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Mabel Heins; wife, DeElta, on Sept. 27, 2008; and two sisters, Marilyn Radloff and Ramona Everman.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 16, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. There will also be a one-hour visitation prior to services Tuesday at the church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville with the Rev. Lynn Noel as the officiant. Burial will follow at Postville Cemetery. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville is helping the family with arrangements.
