Restrictive abortion laws ignore reality

Iowans value freedom especially when it comes to our health care and family planning, including abortion access. However, some extreme MAGA Republicans, aligned with Gov. Reynolds, are threatening these freedoms by pushing for a near-total abortion ban in Iowa. This attack on our rights undermines our ability to make decisions that are best for ourselves and our families.
Restrictive abortion measures ignore the reality of people's lives. Gov. Reynolds defends her abortion ban in the name of protecting "unborn children," ignoring the suffering it inflicts on pregnant individuals who urgently need access to health care. Americans overwhelmingly support access to abortion, especially for sexual violence victims and those facing health risks, even in conservative states and among Republicans.
However, MAGA Republicans exploit this by promoting deliberately impractical exceptions, allowing them to appear moderate without actually compromising on abortion access. While doctors are left to determine vague laws that restrict their ability to practice medicine, women like Kate Cox of Texas are left with few options and must resort to extreme measures to ensure their health and safety.
When laws lead to human suffering or death, their justification becomes irrelevant. Ignoring the voices and needs of Iowans in policymaking processes is inherently cruel. As supporters of abortion access, we stand together to defend our rights and ensure that every Iowan has the freedom to make their own choices about their bodies and health care. We cannot remain silent while lawmakers strip rights and freedoms away from Iowans.
