One dies in Tiffin house fire

A 34-year-old man was killed in a fire at a town house Sunday in Tiffin, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire started just after Johnson County deputies responded to a welfare check at 8:45 a.m. Monday and made contact with a resident at the home, 192 Stephans St. The fire quickly spread to the adjoining residence at 194 Stephans St., a news release said.

Both residences were occupied, and the occupants were evacuated.

James Christensen, 34, of 192 Stephans St., was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he died. Two Johnson County sheriff’s deputies were treated and released from the hospital.

The cause of the fire was not provided by the sheriff’s office, which states the case still is under investigation.
