There will be eight teams in Class 4A clinching berths Monday night to the Iowa high school boys’ state basketball tournament. Here’s a look at the substate final games involving area schools.
Class 4A substate finals
No. 7 Iowa City West (19-3) vs. Bettendorf (16-6)
Location: Alliant Energy PowerHouse, Cedar Rapids
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Synopsis: Iowa City West is in a state tournament drought. For West. The Trojans haven’t been a qualifier since 2020, the last of a 10-year run to Des Moines. The school has seven big-school championships, six with Coach Steve Bergman at the helm. Bettendorf, meanwhile, hasn’t been a state qualifier since 2017. The school has two big-school state championships ... West’s losses were to No. 1 Cedar Rapids Kennedy, No. 6 Dubuque Senior and Linn-Mar. The Trojans avenged the loss to Linn-Mar. The teams have common opponents in Davenport West (Bettendorf has three wins over the Falcons and Iowa City West one) and Linn-Mar (Bettendorf lost to the Lions) ... West is led in scoring by 6-foot-8 junior forward Jack McCaffery, who averages 15.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Senior wing Kareem Earl is next at 12.5 ppg. ... Bettendorf has won nine games in a row and 11 of 12. Bett’s top player is 6-7 senior guard-forward Caden Wilkins, who averages 18.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg and 3.0 apg. He is the school’s all-time scoring leader and has not committed to a college, yet.
No. 1 Cedar Rapids Kennedy (22-0) vs. North Scott (16-6)
Location: Alliant Energy PowerHouse, Cedar Rapids
Time: 8 p.m.
Synopsis: Kennedy has rolled again to this point in the season. The Cougars have beaten five teams in the 4A top 10 (No. 2 West Des Moines Valley, No. 4 Cedar Falls, No. 5 Waukee, No. 6 Dubuque Senior and No. 7 Iowa City West). The 51-47 win early in the regular season over CF is Kennedy’s closest game, with the Cougars beating everyone else by 14 points or more. Kennedy went undefeated last season, too, but was upset by Pleasant Valley in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. North Scott last made it to state in 2020, the finale of a three-year run. It won the 2015 4A title ... Kennedy is a deep team, with four starters averaging double figures in scoring. The exception is senior forward Cyrus Courtney, and he leads the Cougars in assists and is second in rebounds. Junior guard Trey McKowen, head coach Jon McKowen’s son, leads Kennedy in scoring at 13.7 ppg, then it’s senior guard Joe Bean (12.7 ppg), senior forward Trevan Krumrei (10.5 ppg) and senior forward Micah Schlaak (10.3 ppg) ... North Scott is led in scoring by senior forward Brennan Reid (13.5 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and senior guard Jamarion Readus (13.2 ppg). The Lancers lost their final two regular-season games and four of their last six but rebounded with a 70-56 substate semifinal win over Linn-Mar.
