Marion, Decorah, Williamsburg all play for trips to state tournament

There will be eight teams in Class 3A clinching berths Monday night to the Iowa high school boys’ state basketball tournament. Here’s a look at the substate final games involving area schools.
Class 3A substate finals
Williamsburg (15-8) vs. Keokuk (17-6)
Location: Alliant Energy PowerHouse, Cedar Rapids
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Synopsis: Williamsburg knocked off second-seeded Clear Creek-Amana in a district final, 83-63, avenging a pair of regular-season losses. Keokuk stunned top-seeded and fifth-ranked Solon, 56-53, in the district finals ... Williamsburg is led by senior forward Derek Weisskopf. The University of Iowa football signee is a multi-year all-stater in basketball as well and averages 20.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Junior guard Grant Hocker (10.5 ppg) and senior forward Kellen Cockrell (10.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg) also average double-figure points. The Raiders have qualified for the state tournament in 2003 and 2015 ... Keokuk has been a state qualifier nine times, the last in 1999, when it was 3A runner-up. The Chiefs have three double-figures scorers, including 6-foot-9 sophomore Jaxon Clark. He averages 20 points and 11.5 rebounds and shoots 65.5 percent from the field ... The teams have common opponents in Washington (Iowa) and Fairfield. Williamsburg beat them both, while Keokuk beat Fairfield twice and Washington once, also losing once to the Demons.
No. 1 Decorah (21-2) vs. Charles City (15-8)
Location: Cresco
Time: 7 p.m.
Synopsis: Decorah seeks its second state tournament appearance in three years. Charles City seeks its first trip to state since 1956. The teams are Northeast Iowa Conference rivals who played twice in the regular season, Decorah winning both games: 63-50 and 88-57 ... Decorah’s losses are to Waverly-Shell Rock and Cascade. The Vikings are balanced, with four of the five starters averaging double figures in scoring and the other at 9.6. Senior wing Ben Bockman leads the way at 19.6 points per game. Sophomore center Cael LaFrentz (son of former NBA player Raef) averages 16.1 points and 10.8 rebounds ... Charles City lost its first five games but ended the regular season winning 10 of 11. The Comets lost in a substate final last season to Marion. CC’s leading scorer is senior forward Keenen Wiley (16.2 ppg, 9.0 rpg).
No. 6 Marion (18-5) vs. No. 9 Davenport Assumption (15-8)
Location: Alliant Energy PowerHouse, Cedar Rapids
Time: 8 p.m.
Synopsis: Marion seeks its third consecutive state tournament appearance and its fifth in seven years. Assumption seeks its third state tournament appearance in four years ... Marion survived a four-overtime instant classic in its district final against Maquoketa. The Wolves have flourished despite an almost entirely new team. First-year starters Austin Goodrich (12.3 ppg) and Kylar Whitman (11.9 ppg, 8.6 rpg) are the team’s leading scorers. Senior center Whitman had 33 points against Maquoketa, while Goodrich had two winning free throws with just under four seconds to go in the fourth OT ... Assumption played a primarily 4A schedule as a member of the Mississippi Athletic Conference. The Knights beat Mount Vernon in a district final, 61-37. Marion beat Mount Vernon twice in the regular season, 49-34. Junior guard Damyen Jackson (15.2 ppg) and sophomore guard Navon Shabazz (14.9 ppg) are Assumption’s leading scorers ... Assumption has played a game this season at Alliant Energy PowerHouse while Marion has not.
