Larry W. Benge, Sr., 90, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 21, 2024. A visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Monday, February 26, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Hope Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Larry was born December 29, 1933, in Floris, Iowa, the son of Leon and Neva (Brooks) Benge. He graduated from Bloomfield High School. Larry was united in marriage to Carolyn Ann Cumpton on March 10, 1954, in Floris. The couple lived in Mechanicsville and Stanwood for many years before settling in Cedar Rapids. Larry and Carolyn were active members of Hope Lutheran Church. Larry worked at Cherry-Burrell Corp. for 35 years. He loved woodworking, train sets, antique cars (especially his 1940 Ford), and reading Western paperbacks. Larry enjoyed taking day trips with Mary and Michael.
Survivors include his children, Mary Lou and her husband Michael, Sandra, and Andrew; grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, Nicole, Henry; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill, Tony and Jim; and sisters, Sue, Cathy, and Jennifer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Neva Benge; wife, Carolyn Benge; son, Larry Benge, Jr.; brother, Lonnie; and brother-in-law, Cecil.
Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial fund that has been established.
