Hawkeyes start a most-challenging 2-game road stretch with only meeting of the season against Spartans

What to know: This game starts a formidiable two-game road stretch for Iowa. The Hawkeyes play at Illinois Saturday afternoon.
This is the only regular-season meeting between the Hawkeyes and Spartans. Iowa has won four of the last five games in the series, the last one a 112-106 overtime triumph last Feb. 25 in Iowa City.
The Hawkeyes trailed by 13 points with 1:34 left in regulation. They made five 3-pointers in the final 39 seconds of the second half.
Iowa is coming off an 88-86 overtime home win over Wisconsin last Saturday. That night, Michigan State won 73-63 at Michigan, its third-straight victory.
Monday, Hawkeye center Owen Freeman was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the ninth time. The league record is 12, by Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger in 2010.
Freeman has 34 rebounds and 11 blocked shots over his last three games.
Michigan State appears headed for its 26th consecutive NCAA tournament, the second-longest streak in the nation behind Kansas and the third-longest in tournament history.
The Spartans are a veteran crew. Their two top scorers are fifth-year players, guard Tyson Walker (18.4 points per game) and forward Malik Hall (12.7 ppg).
“One of the best players in the country,” Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery called Walker Monday.
“I think Malik Hall is somebody that I've always had a lot of respect for. We recruited him hard. He just keeps getting better ”
Walker has 1,941 career points and 519 assists. He has 135 college starts. Hall has played in 144 games for Michigan State.
