Marion schools will vote on March levy

On Tuesday, March 5, residents of the Marion Independent School District will vote on renewing the district’s existing Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL).
This voter-approved levy generates funds for infrastructure and equipment repairs, purchases, and improvements. Per state law, the money can only be used for these purposes. Most Iowa schools have had a voted PPEL in place for over a quarter-century.
The district does not anticipate a property tax rate impact with a renewed PPEL. District leaders and the Board of Education remain committed to keeping the overall tax rate steady moving forward.
This vital 10-year funding source generates approximately $1 million annually. The district has used PPEL funds for security upgrades, facility maintenance, student desks and tables, buses and vans for student transportation, technology for students and staff, and maintenance equipment.
The existing PPEL would sunset on July 1, 2025 without a renewal. The district would need to consider using general fund or SAVE money to support building upkeep, transportation, and technology—potentially delaying other planned projects.
For anyone who would like more information regarding the PPEL, I would encourage them to visit our webpage at https://www.marion-isd.org/article/1414936.
On behalf of Marion ISD, thank you to our community for the engagement and support shown throughout this important process.
