Which Iowa bills survived the first deadline of the 2024 legislative session?
The first ‘funnel’ eliminated some bills from lawmaker consideration this year

DES MOINES — Fewer bills will be considered by state lawmakers for the remainder of the year after the first legislative deadline of the 2024 session Friday.
To qualify for further consideration for the remainder of the 2024 session of the Iowa Legislature, bills had to be cleared by Friday through the first two steps of the legislative process: approval by a House or Senate subcommittee and full committee.
The hurdle is shorter for the first legislative funnel; many bills survive, but some do not. More funnel deadlines await, with higher hurdles to clear, as the session progresses.
The following lists show which bills survived the first funnel and remain eligible, and which did not survive and are thus ineligible for further consideration.
As always, leaders have multiple legislative tools at their disposal to resurrect “dead” bills, if they choose. That is why a well-known phrase in the Iowa Legislature is that no bill is truly “dead” until lawmakers adjourn for the year.
Bills dealing with state spending or tax policy are not subject to the first funnel deadline, and are not included in these lists.
